Vaccinations
One of the most important protections you can provide your ferrets are their
annual vaccinations for:
-
Canine Distemper -
There are choices of canine distemper vaccines. Here's information you and your
veterinarian should consider.
-
Rabies - As of 1/1/2002 only IMRAB 3 (Merial,
Inc.) is accepted for use in ferrets.
Because of their size and relatively short life span, FACT suggests that you
schedule two visits per year and have each of the vaccinations given six months
apart. Two reasons back this suggestion. First, by spacing the two vaccinations,
you significantly reduce the risk of an anaphylactic shock (a life-threatening
allergic reaction).
But more importantly, it provides your vet the opportunity to give your ferret a
physical twice as often increasing early identification of illnesses such as
tumors or gum disease.
If you consider the average life expectancy of a ferret in the United States is
about 6 - 7 years, 12 to 14 vet visits is not an
unreasonable investment in your pet's health and well-being.
