FACT Disaster Relief Fund

The Ferret Association of Connecticut established a FACT Ferret Shelter Disaster Relief Fund aimed at assisting disaster area shelters to house, care and treat pet domestic ferrets displaced r who suffer physical harm as a result of a disaster. The fund is designed to:

• help provide temporary care - housing, board, and medical services,
   
• transfer ferrets to temporary or permanent housing.

The objective of the fund is to provide professional caregivers such as veterinarians, animal welfare groups and animal shelters a potential source of funds for any extraordinary financial demands that disasters place on them while caring for homeless ferrets until they can:

- be returned to their owners; or,

- transferred to a long term shelter.

It is our desire to minimize the stress of too many hand-offs and to minimize abandonment as a result of financial hardship.

The catalyst for establishing the fund is Hurricane Katrina that has forced the evacuation of tens thousands of residents of the Gulf states and their pets. Short term care and support can be most quickly and professionally addressed by the national animal organizations who have the financial resources, staff, trained volunteers and equipment to offer immediate relief to all species of animal. It is the intent of the FACT Ferret Shelter Disaster Relief Fund to help support longer term, termporary housing.

It is our hope that this fund will not need to be used often.

Who is Eligible

Animal welfare organizations including dedicated ferret shelters and veterinarians providing temporary shelter to pet domestic ferrets.

Types of Needs Supported

May be direct dollar grants or providing supplies or reimbursing extraordinary veterinary services on behalf of affected ferrets. This could mean special diet needs, medication, cages and general supplies. FACT is also prepared to provide ferret-specific care information to further support shelters that may not be accustomed to caring for ferrets.
